Full Potential as a leader for 2021

Your greatest opponent
While writing this post about Full Potential as a leader for 2021, I did miss one crucial part. I am sharing it here beautifully written by Tracy O’Leary, a mindfulness coach, about overcoming your greatest opponent in any field.
“Four years ago, my life was falling apart at the seams. My marriage had just ended, and I had two young children to look after. The company I was working for had lost their big contract to a rival firm leaving my job as one of the positions almost certain to be axed. I also had some important health issues to deal with. To say I was stressed would be an understatement. And to make matters worse, my inner critic was relentless. That harsh, critical, and reprimanding voice in my head was unforgiving and heavy, a daily reminder of everything wrong with my life.
It was in the midst of all this confusion that a friend of mine forwarded to me a job offer with a difference at a local business school where she was working, a job that sounded extremely interesting. It looked fantastic, yet I feared I did not have the credentials or the experience to match the position. I knew it was a long shot, but it was one of those once-in-a-lifetime opportunities, exactly what I needed, and I sure as hell wanted it. I could immediately hear that voice in my head saying, “What, are you kidding me? You’re not good enough to do that! You’re not the person they are looking for. You’ll never be able to do it; you’ll never get that job.” I took a deep breath, stood up to my inner critic, and said thank you for sharing that, but I choose to think differently. So shut up for one minute, please. Shut up. It did, and I immediately rang my friend and told her I was applying for the position.
I wrote out my application on the spot and pressed send before my inner critic could talk me out of it! After a grilling couple of interviews and a long wait, while many other candidates were interviewed, I received a phone call to say that I had got the job!! I was over the moon and beyond excited!! I learned so much, met so many amazing and inspiring people thanks to that job, and I started a whole new chapter of my life. And that is what can come from learning to silence your inner critic. How much extra stress is your inner critic adding to your life? You wouldn’t rent out a room in your house to a nasty, critical person who was always putting you down and on your back. So, why would you rent out your precious headspace to a mean inner critic? The time has come to evict that harsh, critical voice and send it on holiday with a one-way ticket! If you would like some help finding a friendlier and more encouraging lodger for your headspace, shoot me over a PM, and I will give you some personalized tips on how to manage your stress more effectively and how to cultivate your inner cheerleader.”
